    • ARTS COUNCIL OF GREAT BRITAIN

      Jan 1982 - Jan 1986
Founder Dance Artist-in-Residence / Dance Animateur

Appointed as one of five UK FOUNDER Dance Artist-in-Residence/ Dance Animateur’s by the Arts Council of Great Britain joining Marie McCluskey (Swindon), Veronica Lewis (Cheshire), Mollie Kenney (Cardiff) and Linda Jasper (Bracknell). 'Helicoptered' into the rural territory of Suffolk - a one million acre county - my mandate was to ‘make dance happen’, to initiate and grow innovative creative practices; informed and discerning dance and mime audiences; future generations of dancers; choreographers; persuade borough and district councils to programme dance relevant to Suffolk; devise the beginnings of a local schools and youth programme and tackle social agendas impacting Suffolk. Funding came without guarantee. Fixed-term, pump primed seed-funding represented a modest investment - an 'injection of capital' – initially for one year. Arts Council of Great Britain (ACGB) Dance Panel Chair, Chris Bannerman, offered sage advice: ‘Let the work speak'. Determined to foster meaningful relationships, artistic excellence, innovation, and to ‘acquiesce’ opportunity and sustainability I recognised would require flexible, multilingual and interdisciplinary dialogue and understanding of practice and collaboration across different professional boundaries, disciplines, and agencies. Interdependence, was to become a permanent feature of my vision and strategy.Quick win one-off event were not a consideration. Each and every initiative had a trajectory that evolved and built into a bigger vision - project by project, initiative by initiative, artist by artist, dancer by dancer, person by person so as to forge ongoing and sustainable connections and so generate ownership by the artists, dance companies, choreographers, practitioners, young people, teachers and communities of Suffolk, the region, nationally and internationally. One year became two, three ... resulting in the birth of DanceEast in 1986 when I became Founder Director. Show less

Founding, directing pioneering a creative industries agency creating a dance ecology that had a significant impact on dance in the UK. Instrumental in the strategic and artistic development that created a dance ecology that nurtured artistic talent and facilitated access to dance ‘…the map was not the territory - there was no clear path to architect, just a remit to make dance happen, and make it happen… we did! My vision, to forge a sustainable ecology so that there could be legacy beyond any one person.’In one year more than 8,070 people participated in residencies and classes. Individual residencies involved 1000 people dancing. Devising innovative creative practice - imagination and innovation - finding ways to collaborate that particularly stretched and challenged artists…dialogue, practice, creative output. Working with 70 plus UK mainstream dance companies and dance organisations, 300 plus artists from Ballet to Bhangra through a visionary and ongoing Associate Artist Scheme the first and longest serving Associate Artist Wayne McGregor; Russell Maliphant; Adventures in Motion Pictures; Greg Nash; Darshan Singh Bhuller; Banksy and Barrington Pheloug and international organisations Dance Umbrella; European Arts Festival; International Workshop Festival and European Youth Exchange to ensure sustained artistic growth and lineage. Devising the inaugural Artistic Directors Retreat whereby eminent dance leaders and artistic directors could privately engage in facilitated dialogue: Siobhan Davies; Mark Baldwin; Shobana Jeyasingh; Richard Alston; Alistair Spalding and John Ashford. 'Her artistic vision ensured a rich dialogue between all with no perceived hierarchy - that both could learn form and inform each other. The legacy of this vision created respect between the a multiplicity of strands of the dance sector and a real bond between them - all were valued and the importance of this shared respect informed every aspect of her practice.’ Arts Council England.
