 Show more First Class Honours.This dissertation is the culmination of my studies in translation and literary analysis in Trinity College Dublin. This exercise of cultural transference combines translational creativity and contextual translation with the aim of creating an equivalent fiction novel in the Spanish context (which departs from a contemporary American source text). My methodology has relied on three fundamental steps, previous to the act of translating: the creation of a target narrative system, the identification of my potential audience’s expectations in the target context, and the conscious transference of cultural landmarks. Thanks to the fulfilment of these creative stages I hoped to create a coherent target text that relies on a solid, realistic narrative system, which accurately depicts the target socio-historical context. As for the merely linguistic dimension of this case study, the adaptation of the original author’s style and the replication of its idiomatic components (analysed according to several linguistic paradigms in the commentary) have allowed me to recreate the original literary work.In addition, this practical case study has shown that the collusion of literary creation and translation defies strict theorisation. On the other hand, it has also ratified that translational creativity is an effective means of replacing source items that lack formal equivalents in the target language/context. Finally, the use of a complex narrative system has proved indispensable for demarcating the limits of this creative strategy, thus making it conform to my objective of rewriting (not reinventing) The Engagements as Los Compromisos.
