  During my undergraduate education, I pursued research opportunities to enhance my understanding of physiology. I worked in the Human Mobility Lab at ASU where I supported the investigation of the ‘planning process of speech’ in human and patient populations using the startle reflex, with the aim to enhance speech recovery in stroke patients. I participated in the recruitment and training of research participants, organized data analysis of over 100 audio files and presented research findings at supervised research meetings. This experience strengthened my passion for medicine and research, by seeing the success possible in enhancing rehabilitation strategies for the participants. Show less

  During my shifts, I worked closely with emergency physicians, observing and documenting medical histories, the current illness, and the procedures being performed. As the patient’s time in the ED continued, I would update the chart with results from imaging, EKGs, and lab studies, as well as assisted in contacting other specialists for consults when needed. I observed how physicians demonstrate effective bedside manner by encouraging questions and providing reassurance to develop trust with their patients.
