    • United States Senate

      May 2016 - Aug 2016
      Legal Intern, Senator Jeff Merkley

As a legal/policy intern for a Senator in the United States Senate I was able to explore my policy interests by drafting letters to government Department Chairs urging policy change, creating policy memos for Senate Staff on a variety of issues including foreign affairs, taxes/banking/finance reform, military benefits, and LGBTQ rights, and performing extensive research on policy and legal issues. I also attended Committee Hearings on financial terrorism and the state of the economy, briefings on GMOs and the environment, meetings on campaign finance reform, rural economic mobility, and hedge fund management, and lectures from department heads and Congresspersons. I was able to enhance my legal skills as well by conducting legal research, copy-editing legal counsel's work including an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court of the United States. Through my internship I was able to put my customer service skills to use by responding to constituent concerns and asks and conducting Capitol tours for constituents. I was assigned a leadership role and put in charge of training and auditing my fellow interns on Tours--in fact, I created the auditing system and the Tour Guide Manual the office will continue to use. In addition to the legal and policy experience, I also performed general office duties like mail sorting, database management, answering phones, copying, filing, and running errands like taking amendments to the Senate floor.
