  Listening Volunteer

  Warwick Nightline is a student-run listening service at the University of Warwick, providing support every night of term from 9pm to 9am. Whilst a member, I completed over 600 hours of on-night volunteering, helped to train new volunteers twice a year, assisted in developing new policies and served in two executive positions.Oct 2014 – Feb 2015, Instant Messaging (IM) officer*This role mainly involved organising and running two hour IM training sessions for volunteers. *Other duties included: keeping records of attendance, booking rooms and giving IM tests to volunteers to qualify as IM-trained.Feb 2015 – March 2016, On-going Training (OGT) officer*Primarily, I was responsible for organising and running OGT sessions for volunteers. *Additional duties included: running training sessions, liaising with external speakers and trainers, booking rooms and keeping records of attendance.*Examples of sessions are: Mental Health First Aid lite training, Samaritans workshop, ‘I Heart Consent’ Workshop, and emotional resilience training from the Head of Counselling.   Oxfam is a charity that works to alleviate poverty across the World by raising money for aid and community projects.• Every year, Oxfam raises around £1 million each summer by supplying festivals with stewards who volunteer to complete three 8.5 hour shifts across the duration of the festival.• The role primarily involved being approachable, friendly and professional with members of the public, with additional jobs including managing a team of 20 stewards, giving directions, patrolling festival venues, and working with security staff to keep festival-goers safe.   Rape and Sexual Violence Project (RSVP) is a charitable organisation that provides a range of services, including a helpline and counselling, to survivors of sexual violence and abuse.• The helpline is a non-judgemental, non-advisory support service that listens to survivors, and offers information and/ or referrals to other services within RSVP when appropriate.• After five weeks of training and shadow shifts, helpline volunteers complete one 3-hour shift per week.• The role principally involved using active listening skills to engage with survivors, provide empathy and compassion, building rapport and trust, and reflecting on our own emotional state.   Mind is one of the UK’s largest and leading mental health charities that provides a range of support services to anyone experiencing mental health issues.• In this role, I worked in an integrative way, seeing up to four adult clients a week, for up to 8-weeks. Clients are assessed before every session using CORE-10.• Clients presented with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationship issues, sexual violence, suicidal feelings and addiction.• I attended both group and individual supervision for a minimum of 2 hours a month.   As one of two Performance Review Managers in the Performance Review Unit, I am directly responsible for managing a team developing business intelligence products, including Power BI, surveys, stop and search, Freedom of Information requests (FOIs), Annual Data Returns (ADRs) and fulfilling other statutory data requests, including from HMICFRS. In this role I work within the Performance and Governance department primarily designing and managing surveys pertaining to a range of police-related topics, analysing qualitative and quantitative data and presenting results in a variety of methods, including presentations and reports.
