One of the highlights at university was in 2013, when I participated in an OT study tour in Sweden and Denmark. It was great to meet OTs in these countries, and compare differences in their uni courses and health care systems.

      In 2012, I completed a two-week fieldwork placement at Sale Hospital. I visited a local aged care facility with my supervisor regularly over the fortnight. We educated clients and health professionals, prescribed a powered wheelchair and helped solve issues around self-care and leisure.

      I participated in a 5 day camp with Muscular Dystrophy Association of Australia. I was a full time carer for one camper during the camp. I assisted them with self care activies such as showering, toileting and eating, and to complete leisure activities.

      In my third year of university, I completed a fieldwork placement in the GEM ward at the McKellar Inpatient Rehabilitation Centre two days a week over six weeks. I worked with some clients who had delirium, were recovering from surgeries such as hip replacements and those who had experienced a fall and as a result ended up in hospital. I got experience conducting both formal and informal assessments, educating clients about falls prevention, assisting with breakfast groups, documenting sessions according to organisation requirements, visiting client’s home and making recommendations and drawing up drafts for home modifications. In addition to this, I communicated with clients, their families and other health professionals in the team to create plans for discharge. Show less

      During my fieldwork placement in the Children’s Allied Health Service (Sunshine Hospital), I worked within a transdisciplinary team to provide Occupational Therapy services to preschool and school aged children with developmental delays and developmental coordination disorder. The main aim for therapy was to either prepare children for primary school or provide intervention for issues related to school based activities for school aged children. I worked closely with each child and their family to develop goals and plans for therapy, conducted informal and formal assessments, planned and conducted intervention programs, assisted with a social skills group and visited kindergartens and children’s homes. I gained experience documenting therapy sessions according to organisational requirements. In addition, I assisted with research exploring the importance and role of Occupational Therapist’s within the setting of Neonatal Special Care Nurseries. Show less

      Encompass is an organisation based in Geelong which offers day services and respite for adults in the community who have disabilities. I attended Encompass 2 days a week for 8 weeks. During this time, I assisted with implementing the day programs, such as cooking, dancing, art, ten pin bowling, photography and gym sessions. During this time, I was able to use my Occupational Therapy skills to offer suggestions regarding sensory interventions for adults with autism. Additionally, I wrote a modification report for the installation of a grab rail in the bathroom to assist carers with transfers on and off the toilet. Show less
