      Truck Driver

I drove double trailer semi trucks for 16 hour shifts for one tomato season in the agricultural lands of California. As the youngest of a couple hundred seasonal drivers I had an amazing opportunity to be exposed to a number of industries many people never see. The job was commission-based and I was in the top 5 with a perfect safety record.

I had an amazing opportunity with this internship at Freightliner to work in the product validation group of Corp 3, 2 and the wind tunnel with a diverse group of departments. I was tasked with projects designed to improve fuel economy for trucks through aerodynamics as part of the EPA's 2020 goals. I had the privilege of both having a lunch meeting with 2 representatives of the German company Jost to discuss similar fifth wheel projects, and to drive business leaders from overseas around in electric semi trucks. My first project was designing and prototyping a motorized sliding fifth wheel assembly that would move a trailer closer to the back of a truck cab while it is driving, then back again. The second and most memorable project was designing, building, and working with a team to install a motorized sliding addition to the permanent trailer fixture in Freightliner's wind tunnel. The new fixture allows for the cantilevered trailer to extend it's own length up to the back of a truck during wind tunnel tests for aerodynamic experiments for fuel economy improvements. Show less
