In my first post-graduate role, I was assigned to KPMG Perth’s audit and assurance division tasked with performing both internal and external audits. As an auditor, primary responsibilities included ensuring compliance with established controls, verifying assets and liabilities, documenting audit tests and findings, appraising, maintaining and updating internal control systems, preparing final reports (including recommendations) and complying with legislative and regulatory requirements.Initially, assignments were small, a chance to prove myself however, after consistent strong performances, I was promoted to Assistant Manager and began servicing large listed companies and ASX Top 100 listed organisations predominantly in the fields of mining, construction and property development. This was an invaluable experience, one which expedited my learning, expanded my knowledge-base and opened me up to the nuances of industry specific accounting. KPMG Perth was an excellent proving ground, one which appropriately skilled me for a career in audit and assurance however, an opportunity too good to pass up was presented and I embarked on a new adventure, one with Nexia Perth. It’s not unusual to find me delivering services to ASX listed groups, family owned businesses and Not-for-profit organisations.Typical services include internal audits, internal control reviews (specific focus on controls design, implementation and operating effectiveness), identifying practical, sustainable and cost-effective recommendations to address identified internal control gaps, formal documentation of systems incorporating findings and recommendations (from internal controls review) and developing cost-effective approaches to monitor compliance. Furthermore, I maintain an interest in data analytics and data mining having used accounting software to identify anomalous transactions buried in over 15,000 lines of data.As an Associate Director, I am tasked with leading contemporaries and contributing to the organisation’s strategic direction, two responsibilities I treat with the utmost respect.
