      Programme: Technical acoustics.Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research (MWL)The PhD investigated the sound insulating properties of structures such as building construction double-walls and multi-layered panels featuring porous materials used in the car industry; the novel formulation of elements for the statistical energy analysis of those structures required me to devise original self-adjoint variational principles for non-conservative media, specifically porous materials either described by equivalent fluid theory or Biot's equations. These variational principles became useful for a better understanding of the underlying physics of the media and as a basis to formulate waveguide finite elements to reveal the wave motion in the coupled multilayered structures. Original acoustics measurements for defining some of the vibroacoustic properties of porous materials relevant to Biot's theory have been developed working closely with other colleagues in MWL; that and standard acoustic measurements allowed to obtain inputs for statistical energy analysis model and to have data to compare results with.The research path mixed theoretical studies to calculations to acoustic measurements, and focused both on the latest development of research in vibroacoustic and on the needs of industry.PhD partly funded by Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council) and EU-project Mid-Mod.
