When youth who are involved in the juvenile justice system are placed in facilities far from their homes, face-to-face family visitation can be challenging to arrange and is unlikely to occur on a regular basis. As a result, the connection between youths and their families can suffer, making successful reintegration back in to the family upon release substantially more difficult. Compliance with the aftercare plan may be reduced if the family has not been actively involved in the process or with the youth during placement. Further, youth who lack a positive family connection may be more prone to emotional and behavioral problems while in placement because of that disconnect; this can translate into emotional and behavioral outbursts that take time away from treatment activities, lead to physical injury for self or others, and cost additional staff time to control appropriately. Finally, families who are not appropriately involved in the juvenile justice system process may be unaware of the treatment services that are being provided to their youth. This can pose a challenge for youth at reentry because the family is not knowledgeable and is unable to provide support in sustaining the changes that the youth are making as a result of treatment. It places all of the responsibility on the youth to educate the family as well as continuing in their progress. This project was a joint partnership with multiple Youth Development Centers across PA to develop a set of best practices for family involvement that did not rely on caregivers being able to physically attend activities at the facilities.
