      Jun 1985 - Oct 1989
      Senior System Engineer

I initially worked in the Future Systems Group of the Airborne Radar Division, which concentrated on developing new concepts and techniques for use in future airborne radars. My main areas of work were mathematical modelling of radar modes, signal processing algorithm development and system design for radar proposals. This included developing signal processing algorithms for complex radar modes of operation and the development of a detailed computer simulation to predict the performance of typical multi-mode radars. In the later part of this employment period I worked on the European Fighter Aircraft (EFA) project, where I was responsible for providing systems support, especially in the areas of radar performance prediction, to the European consortium. This involved performing system design, proposal preparation and presentation and dealing with detailed technical questions from the Customer.I was also responsible for the day to day supervision of other staff members, which involved work planning, delegation and on-the-job training. Other tasks included planning and prioritising work, as well as the technical review of requirements, design and test for projects. I was required to keep abreast of new technologies relevant to the company, in order to define future strategies. In addition to my functional responsibilities, I also acted as either Systems Manager or Technical Manager for particular projects. This involved full customer liaison, specification of the system functional requirements, production of top level software and hardware requirements and design. Projects ranged from complicated multi-processor designs for radar simulation/stimulation purpose to complete radar systems, including several multi-national projects. In particular, as a Technical Manager, I provided guidance to all engineering teams (including hardware and software) in the interpretation of project requirements, presentation to the Customer at all project lifecycle design reviews, negotiation of specifications and contracts, as well as release of documentation and equipment, ensuring its production to contractual standards.
