My thesis is multimethodological, combining and applying theory and methodology from qualitative and quantitative disciplines in Linguistics for the purposes of text analysis. With regards to qualitative analysis, I am mainly interested in (Critical) Discourse Analysis and Multlimodality. In terms of quantitative analysis, I employ Corpus Linguistics. The subject of my thesis is a large collection of picturebooks for children featuring families with same-sex (gay/lesbian) parents. It analyses quantitative semiotic trends in the books with regards to the context of their production; including political, social, and commercial issues which have led to them being rare and controversial whenever they are published.I have presented findings from my research to a number of international conferences, to several international publishers and in the Houses of Parliament. Findings have also been channelled into a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and have been integrated into the social action project Challenge It, which I lead. You can read more about Challenge It further below on this page. Show less I work closely with social media data as part of an ESRC-funded research project on Discourses of Online Misogyny (DOOM). The main aim of DOOM is to understand threatening and abusive behaviour in online contexts and looks specifically at cases of rape threats made using Twitter. A short summary:In July 2013, after Caroline Criado-Perez successfully campaigned to have a woman appear on a UK banknote, she and a number of other prominent women were inundated with misogynistic abuse on Twitter. The abuse included instances of graphic, sadistic, and repeated threats of rape, murder, and torture.DOOM (Discourses of Online Misogyny) is a project focussed on understanding these misogynistic threats, who makes them, how and why, but also on advancing research into threatening online behaviour by developing methods for revealing meaningful trends in large collections of online data, mainly through the implementation of methods from Corpus Linguistics. Of key importance is whether links can be observed between rape threats and other forms of threatening online behaviour/hate speech that may be otherwise undiscoverable without the implementation of corpus methods.---The work involves working within a dynamic and multi-disciplinary research environment, taking novel approaches to data collection, organisation and analysis; and to contribute to all outputs and publications from the project. Also key to the role is developing innovative approaches to engagement, collaboration and knowledge exchange with a range of audiences, including academics, policymakers, non-academic users of research and the general public. Contractor - SMAC (Social Media, Mobility, Analytics, Cloud) solutions

A key issue for brands using social media is how to quickly and effectively identify, interpret and engage with online consumer/client interactions to enable lead generation or prevent potential reputational risk.In this position, I worked with the Social Media, Mobility, Analytics, Cloud (SMAC) solutions team deploying expertise in quantitative linguistic analysis for the purposes of producing new software to detect potential brand risks and consumer leads in the context of social media. Corpus linguistic approaches to the use of language on Twitter were used to generate linguistic profiles used to engineer algorithms designed to aid brand managers to easily identify potentially positive (i.e. lead generation) and negative (i.e. brand risk) consumer interactions in social media. The role implemented knowledge and expertise from, amongst other things:• Corpus Linguistics• Social Network Analysis (SNA)• (Online) Marketing & Consumer Brand Relationships (CBR)• Social Media AnalysisAs part of the role, I was also fortunate to be able to generate expertise in a number of areas which I have since channelled into further research, including:• R (for analysis and algorithm construction)• Social Network Analysis (for community detection, detecting network influencers, analysing discourse communities, etc)• Product development Show less

This role incorporates a number of responsibilities, including teaching (BA, MA and PhD supervision), administrative, pastoral, and research duties. My teaching duties include face-to-face and online teaching, curriculum and assessment design and administration. I have designed curricula and assessments at levels 4-7, including Corpus Linguistics materials for MA and level 6 students, Discourse Analysis at level 6, and more introductory materials in the areas of Corpus Linguistics, (Critical) Discourse Analysis, Grammar, Phonetics, Phonology, Pragmatics, and Social Semiotics for all undergraduate levels. In my first year of teaching (2016-7) I was nominated for an Engaging and Inspiring Teacher of the Year award as part of the BCU Extra Mile Awards, which aim to recognize exceptional contribution to the BCU community. I was again nominated for this award as well as the Personal Tutor of the Year award in my second year of teaching (2017-8). In terms of administration, I sit on a number of board and planning meetings and have taken on several important positions within the School of English. These positions include being appointed to the role of Subject Lead for Language early in my position (01/2017) and subsequently BA Course Director (2018-19), academic case officer (2017-8), and moodle champion (2018-9). Pastoral responsibilities (including personal tutoring) sit alongside both my teaching and administrative responsibilities. In terms of research, my work typically involves some combination of approaches from Critical Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, and Multimodality/Social Semiotics. Show less
