      Jan 2006 - Jan 2008
      Director of Business Development
    • Western University

      Jul 2008 - Apr 2013
Consultant, Research Development, Services and Ethics, Western University (permanent position)

I worked on applications in all disciplines, from STEM, to medicine, to law, engineering and the arts. My focus was on applications deemed of strategic importance to Western University, with neuroscience/psychology, business, law, philosophy and genomics being five such foci. From 2008 to 2017, I worked with all of Western's faculties, affiliates, hospitals and Institutes.-Faculties/Institutes/Affiliates/Hospitals: The Faculty of Education, The Ivey Business School, The Schulich School of Medicine, Arts and Humanities, The Faculty of Health Sciences, Law, Social Science, Engineering, The Faculty of Music, FIMS; Brescia, Kings and Huron University Colleges;St. Joseph's, Victoria and University Hospitals; The Robarts Research Institute, The Lawson Health Research Institute and; Western's Tech-transfer and business development incubator (WORLDiscoveries).I was tasked with bringing our Faculties into closer and more frequent collaboration on research projects. This took three years and was a team effort involving senior university administrators, Faculty Deans, researchers, Centres, Institutes and teams. An example 2013 success for Western University:For Western's three largest SSHRC grants, our applications were ranked #1 of 74, 6/100 and 7/100 for all major institutional applications received nationally. A notable 2012 success: I was Western's Research Office lead on our application to the Canada Excellence Research Chairs program (CERC), which is Canada's largest program to fund the research of an individual and their team. Our application was ranked #1 among the applications submitted. Dr. Adrian Owen was recruited from Cambridge to Western University as CERC. This started as a $22 million application which has since grown significantly in size and scope. As the result of this experience, I am very comfortable acting as the empathetic yet effective bridge between groups with most often concordant, but sometimes significantly divergent aims. Show less

    • Ivey Business School

      May 2013 - Nov 2016
Director, Research PhD and Postdoctoral Studies

2013-16 budgeting:Responsible for $5.6 million in Ivey budgets across the Research, PhD and Postdoctoral Studies departments. In fiscal 2015, we restructured the way our faculty members were funded, increasing the research budget by ~20%.Our International Financial Times Ranking increased eleven points in three years. This was perhaps our greatest success, brought about through significant changes to research funding allocation and by enticements and rewards for publications in top-ranked business journals. 2014-15: Of 12 SSHRC grants I reviewed for Ivey, 10 were successful (83%). The national success rate for the IG and IDG grants was 23%.2014-15: I trained staff to write and review Tri-council applications. Ivey's Research Officer went on to have a 50% success rate in her first year, over double the national rate. The reviewed NSERC grant was also successful and we secured additional health contract research funding for $6 million. In 2013-14: the year I was hired, I oversaw significant departmental budget cuts and managed to keep our full complement of staff at a time when other departments were unfortunately required to make staffing cuts. Our faculty increased the number of Financial Times publications produced over three years (Ivey's top measure for success). From 2008-2017, I worked with the President’s Office, with Research Ethics Boards, with Research Offices and with Finance Departments to set up and/or amend policy. I sought to deeply understand then ameliorate applications of all types (in ethics, research and finance) to the benefit of all involved in Western’s research enterprise. I was in the relatively unique position of working closely with the University’s Central offices, with departments and with individual faculty researchers over a period of years. I was thus exposed to both the macro and micro picture. Consequently, I was an advocate for evolution / change in systems and structures that could sometimes remain static over many years. Show less
