After 30 years as a sports-focused chiropractor, I know how important it is for athletes to apply the basic principles of ergonomics to optimize performance and minimize the risk of injury. And, if we are exercising, we are also athletes in our own way. In general, the yoga block is a great device to facilitate various stretches and asanas. But, since its debut in the mid-1970s, its shape has never really been as user-friendly as it could be. The old rectangular block is just a bit too large to provide a secure, stable or comfortable grip, not to mention the high pressure on the wrists. When I started yoga routinely, I soon found my wrists becoming sore from using the old blocks. After one class, while examining some old blocks, I said to myself, "Why are these yoga blocks flat? My hands aren't flat. We need yoga blocks that are shaped to match the shape of our hands". So, I proceeded to make the first ergonomic, hand-shaped yoga blocks.
