The Fair Work Ombudsman
Feb 2020 - now* Approving and escalating proposed media responses plus drafting them where appropriate;* Writing media releases and Q&As regarding formal enforcement outcomes such as enforceable undertakings and proactive audit-related reports; * End-to-end delivery of media materials including fact-finding, assisting with publication, preparation of EDMs and pitching to key journalists. * Pitching and arranging media opportunities for the CEO;* Working groups in relation to agency priority industries such as fast food, restaurants and cafes and agriculture; * Culturally and linguistically diverse media liaison with translated materials; and* Media monitoring.Key results* Recognised for drafting the first media release for a university enforceable undertaking and which also for the first time combined two enforceable undertakings. Accurately and succinctly captured both the facts of two separate million-dollar university underpayments and a message for the FWO’s broader universities’ enforcement strategy. The release secured prominent, positive coverage in all the key target cities’ papers – page 1 in Wagga Wagga, and page 2 in each of Newcastle and Bathurst. The Q&As also supported the CEO to complete successful radio interviews in each of these three cities. * Further recognised for taking ownership of the Media’s team efforts to meet our annual target of translating 12 media releases in 2021-22. Proactively looked for appropriate media announcements to translate, engaged with the external translating service and then pitched the resulting release to culturally and linguistically diverse media outlets. The result was about 20 in-language articles published (plus some well-viewed social media/videos) that very likely would not have otherwise been written, and which reached harder-to-access audiences including potential vulnerable workers and their employers.* These key results were together selected for recognition by Corporate Board.Note: acting until 19/10/23. Show less * Drafting and escalating proposed responses following requests from journalists and other media professionals; * Preparing media releases in relation to formal enforcement outcomes such as the commencement of litigations and court-ordered penalties; * Pitching media releases strategically to key journalists and media outlets; * Culturally and linguistically diverse media liaison with the provision of translated media materials; * Working groups such as annual wage review; * Media monitoring; and* Administration such as team-related finance and invoices.Key results* Secured multiple instances of high-profile print coverage in national broadsheets as well as highly relevant targeted coverage in regional publications, as well as broadcast coverage through the national broadcaster, commercial radio and television. * Secured culturally and linguistically diverse coverage (in languages other than English) to help seed compliance and enforcement messages for audiences that may include vulnerable workers such as migrants and backpackers. * Helped transition the media team into a new content management system for the distribution of EDMs by liaising with technical colleagues, teaching the team how to use it, and troubleshooting.
