Selection was based on exemplary leadership skills and outstanding academic leadership performance as a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). The program intended to educate, inspire, and expand our thinking through special cultural activities, presentations, and events. We were introduced to Australia’s Universal Health Care System and examined the integral roles nurses play in the administration of appropriate care. ISLP students were given a special presentation on Aboriginal Health and Medicine, which opened our minds to the cross-cultural issues and challenges associated with providing modern care to indigenous people. We were also given the opportunity to visit the Nursing School at the University of Sydney and interact with Australian Nursing Students in order to have a broader view on the field of Nursing, their education system, and simply develop friendships. Academic meetings were held daily to discuss our career paths and students participated in researched group presentations where topics such as Indigenous Care and Bush Medicine, Addressing Community Needs, Raising a Child in Australia, and Reforming the Nursing Profession were presented before the class. Interactive sessions were also held with nurses, educators, and public health professionals from Sydney hospitals, clinics, and universities to discuss issues of concerns in Australia’s nursing field.
