Residential Services Manager and Therapeutic Counselor

As a student working on my Masters Degree in Community Counseling / Psychology, I worked as a Counselor for women, men, and children at the Montgomery County Women's Center. Weekly individual, family, and group sessions. Toward the end of my student internship I was hired as a Counselor/Advocate at the MCWC crisis Shelter. I was then asked and subsequently hired to oversee the Transitional Housing Program for women and children who need a safe and affordable place to live while they prepare for a place of their own in the community. Issues the women and their children face are wide ranging, including mental health issues, financial instability, substance abuse, PTSD, core and extended family issues. While living in a long term, safe, and empowering residential environment, women and children receive individual and family counseling as well as participate in support and therapy groups. Other components of the program include healthy eating on a budget, yoga, and various exercise options including preparation for running 5K races as a community. Birthdays, graduations, work anniversaries and promotions, and other milestones are celebrated monthly. We also worked with and encouraged the women and their college age children to pursue higher education by going to college or a technical school, and provided educational scholarships. Assessing strengths and skills to find the career that will bring security to these individuals and families is a huge component of the program. The average length of stay is 2 years. Show less
