It involved SCUBA diving, underwater photography, tallying fish and corals, and recording data on a dive slate.       My research was on the impacts of recreational snorkellers on the corals of Pulau Manukan and Pulau Sapi, off Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. By tracking the geospatial extent of tourists' snorkelling activities with a GPS unit and recording the coordinates of places where they stepped on or touched corals, I planned to develop a map to help Sabah Parks identify which areas might need to be cordoned off using booms to reduce coral damage from human impacts.       The Aquarium & Museum of Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI/IPMB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah is a small attraction on the campus which showcases some of the animals that the institute is researching, like giant groupers and various other grouper hybrids (fish breeding and cultivation) and corals (coral propagation). My work there as an industrial trainee involved cleaning tanks by SCUBA diving, collecting live coral and seaweed specimens from the wild for the exhibits, assisting graduate students with field work, collecting data on water quality to plan the renovation of a tank, and working on a project which aims to improve tank water quality using seaweeds.
