'Sophara's Dream' showcasing 201718 work 'Wonder' showcasing 201617 work At the second Fashion and Sustainability Forum, we take the long view when considering the complex issues of this subject - fast fashion, planned obsolescence, 'designed for the dump' clothing and other goods. The 'tyranny of choice' leads to confusion and anxiety - how do we make responsible choices? This is not about guilt and shame; it is about enabling us to find creative solutions. 'Glitch' 201516 work The rapidly changing nature of the global fashion industry presents challenges to the entire world: people, the environment; from the design process through development and production to the consumer phase and product end of life. Of course, sustainability is not a new issue, but there is an increasing need for sustainable practices.Sustainability should be normalised, not fashionable. We cannot afford to let this issue go 'out of fashion'.

      Fashion and sustainability forum

We're in a time of rapid change, destabilisation and disruption for the fashion industry (and education), and for the people within it - how to address some of the old and new challenges we face now in both industries is something we considered - questioning how to embed sustainability into the curriculum in a way that motivates students to critically engage, reflect and create in a meaningful and transformative way through experiential learning, collaboration and reflection. The idea of sustainability means different things to different people, culturally, socially, economically and personally. We all understand the Earth's resources are finite, yet still demand outstrips supply. There is no 'one-size fits all' solution; we need to acknowledge this and learn to work together to relieve the pressure. Show less
