      CREATE(HER)

Nearly 60 years ago, when the Black Panther Party led the movement for Black Liberation, the leaders understood that true freedom would require empowering Black people with tools to fight against the systems of oppression and the ability to be free in their bodies and souls. When the Panthers issued their 10-point program, they called for Serving the People BODY AND SOUL. In our work today, this means 1) understanding that trauma and stress are stored in the body and soul and create an internal prison; 2) acknowledging that rest and healing is a critical and necessary organizing strategy for leaders fighting for liberation; and 3) connecting to ancestral wisdom and the soul within all of us, infused with the knowledge that modern neuroscience provides us, offering a pathway to healing ourselves and achieving true freedom. The Omowale Project’s founder, Emani Davis, is uniquely positioned to create and lead this work. Emani began representing and advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents at the age of 14 and has served those affected by the criminal legal system and incarceration from within nonprofits and as a practitioner and consultant. She is a certified massage therapist, health educator and death doula, and is trained in delivering cognitive therapeutic models, PSYCH-K™ and Somatic Experiencing® practices. The Omowale Project’s vision as the people who serve the people who serve the people, is the inevitable culmination not only of Jomo’s legacy and of Emani’s personal and professional experience, but of Emani’s deep connection to her community, past and present: for Black leaders, work such as this is an expression of humanity and longing for the actualization of a vision 400 years in the making.
