      Jun 2014 - Feb 2015
Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Researcher & Final Year Reseach Student

Through a Wellcome Trust Funded Biomedical Vacation Scholarship and my final year research project, I had the pleasure of working in the O’Sullivan lab where I learned a great deal about the molecular and cellular underpinnings of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This work investigated the interactions between protein- and RNA-processing pathways, using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, and how their disruption (i.e. disturbed proteasome or RNA binding protein function) results in a molecular and behavioural phenotype similar to that seen in human ALS. Interestingly, the results of my research suggested that an upregulation of proteasome function could reduce protein aggregation and help reduce behavioural deficits caused by such disruptions. Techniques/Skills included Wellcome Trust application writing, behavioural analysis (locomotor, rollover, survival, climbing assays), molecular biological techniques (RNA/DNA extraction, sqPCR, immunohistochemistry), Drosophila genetics (familiarity with UAS-Gal4 System Genetics) and dissections, confocal image analysis (FIJI/Image J), thesis and Wellcome Trust final report writing and thesis (oral), poster and lab meeting (powerpoint) presentations. Investigating the molecular mechanisms underpinning of inherited forms of motor neuron diseases in Drosophila and Cellular models.

    • Conway Institute, UCD, Dublin, Ireland

      Oct 2016 - Oct 2020
Wellcome Trust - NIH PhD Student

Wellcome Trust - NIH PhD student funded to work on an international collaboration between the labs of Dr. Niamh O'Sullivan, UCD, Dublin, Ireland and Dr. Craig Blackstone, NINDS, NIH, MD, USA. At UCD, I used novel gene editing tools to generate in vivo models of inherited motor neuron disease in Drosophila melanogaster. These models will be directly compared with human cellular models of the disease at the NIH.
