MDR Second Officer Mr. Shaw was approached by an ailing seaman complaining of mild chest pains. Mr. Shaw evaluated him and initially treated the CIVMAR for indigestion. When the CIVMAR returned complaining of the same symptoms, Mr. Shaw reevaluated him and realized this was more then indigestion and that he had a more serious life threatening medical situation developing very quickly. He knew he had to act quickly if his medical training was correct. Mr. Shaw was aware of the realization that an ambulance would be delayed while trying to obtain access onto the pier of Mina Salman Naval Facility her in the Kingdom of Bahrain and Mr. Shaw did not want to waste precious minutes. He arranged for another watch officer to relieve him of his watch duties, obtained the mariner's medical record and immediately provided the mariner with transportation to the nearest hospital with the use of his POV. In Bahrain in order for anyone to be admitted for medical care a "One Time" up front payment must be made. The hospital admittance staff determined the mariner did not have ample funds and his health insurance was not accepted; Mr. Shaw without any hesitation provided the relentless medical staff with the necessary funding to have the mariner admitted to the emergency ward in order to have necessary blood test performed. Mr. Shaw remained with his patient and provided me with steady updated information on the mariner's condition and level of care he was receiving.Because Second Officers Mr. Shaw's immediate resourcefulness, unselfish and persistent determination to assist a medically ailing seaman in critical state, he was able to get the mariner the expert medical care in time that ultimately saved his life.
