Responsible for a production and logistics team of ten people that included fork lift truck drivers, manual pallet truck operators, palletiser and spin wrapper operators. The production teams worked the ends of production lines creating pallets of wrapped plastic bottles destined for internal and external customers. The logistics team supplied the whole factory with raw materials from a large external warehouse and a smaller internal one via a shunt system involving a fleet of taut liners. We operated JIT as space was at a premium on the site. Effective communication was essential to ensure that taut liners arrived on time to be emptied of raw materials and refilled with finished product. Show less

The Imperial Tobacco Group is extremely well regarded within the tobacco sector. It is one of the largest tobacco product manufacturers in the world. My first role within this site was to manage a large scale planned change environment. This included the removal of redundant production machinery and the installation of new equipment, whilst limiting the impact on current production. This went hand in hand with redeploying the existing labour, designing a new self relieving team working structure and then recruiting / training the new manning structure personnel. Imperial Tobacco is highly unionised, and each step of the implementation had to be negotiated and agreed with the unions first. The whole project took a couple years to complete. At the end of the project, I managed eight brand new mid speed cigarette making and packing complexes, crewed by twenty four personally recruited and selected teams of technical staff and operators, working a brand new structure never seen before in the factory. For the next nine years I consolidated this green field site into a successful manufacturing department with excellent attainment, low waste, high machine efficiencies and fully engaged personnel. The model was seen as a success and was eventually rolled out into other production areas. After spending about ten years working in this new area, I was invited onto the Ultra High Speed production area to manage the production teams there. The teams numbered thirty seven technical staff and operators. The business was introducing yet another new working structure into this area. Again, the unions were involved at all stages and a successful outcome arose.I have enjoyed the last eight years working closely with these teams, helping with their development and enriching their roles where appropriate. All the standard manufacturing KPI's have applied throughout my career within Imperial and I feel as though I have contributed towards them positively.
