In this study, I model fine-scale habitat preferences, determine how organization into distinctive units of associating female and juveniles influences habitat use, and describe how movements change across the 24-hour cycle. My research concerns a well-studied population of sperm whales off Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean. Statistical models suggest that overall habitat use is rather homogenous, and social behaviour is best predicted by the presence of mature males. Variation among social units in the amount of time spent, and space occupied, within the study area indicates habitat preferences at the level of the social unit. Finally, movements are influenced by the diurnal cycle, as whales tend to move from inshore to offshore at dusk. This study improves our understanding of sperm whale habitat decisions over fine-scales, and has implication for conservation and management strategies. Show less

SummarySpent a cumulative 1.5 years conducting boat-based research on toothed whales using passive acoustic monitoring, photo-identification, and skin and fecal sample collection. Assumed progressive research responsibilities as a volunteer, graduate student and acting principal investigator. VolunteerAssisted studies on sperm whale social relationships and communication off Dominica (2008-2010 seasons). Surveyed endangered northern bottlenose whales in the Scotian Shelf for the first intensive population assessment since the creation of the Gully Marine Protected Area (Aug 2010 & July 2011). Performed offshore research (Mar 2013) and oversaw data collection as acting principal investigator (Apr 2014) for a doctoral study on the interplay between social structure and culture in sperm whales off the Galapagos Islands. Graduate Student (2010-2013)Arranged logistics for two six-week field seasons in Dominica (2011 & 2012), procured and maintained research equipment, and oversaw field expenditures. Trained five volunteers in research protocols and safe boat operation. Managed long-term databases and updated the Dominica whale catalog. Show less
