Spent a number of weeks on the factory floor using various pieces of equipment. During this time I came to understand how the factory floor is run and how the product goes from drawing to completed item ready to be sold. Designed and manufactured a security barrier for another of the company’s factories. This gave me the opportunity to follow a project from the initial design to completion and to learn how each step of the process is run.Modified existing drawings in order to fit new needs required by the customers. This enabled me to use my problem solving skills to adapt the product for the new needs and also gave me the chance to develop my CAD skills in both 2D and 3D environments. Show less

I created a standard for a nickel chromium electroplating process. To create the new standard, I combined the individual extant standards for nickel and chromium plating with a draft process specification provided by the supplier. This task developed my report writing skills and also my communication skills in attending meetings with the client.I updated a mechanical drawing standard to meet new requirements from the client, this involved reviewing current and withdrawn standard in order to identify the sections that should be incorporated into the updated standard. This task was performed in conjunction with the nickel chromium standard, developing my time management skills to ensure time, quality and cost targets were met.In addition to my projects I also performed low level checking of deliverables for other projects. The checks I performed included: the development of a series of independent calculations to ensure pipe flow velocities were within the boundaries stated within a report and a check through calculations performed to provide assurance that a component would not fail under fatigue if it’s service life was extended beyond the initial design limits. These checks gave me experience of new software and also quality assurance processes within a large organisation. Show less

Supporting the DARPA CRANE program by undertaking research into the pipe networks usedto deliver a compressed air supply to novel control effectors. This involved:Review of existing literature to identify the limits of current knowledge.Development of numerical models to quantify the flow behaviour within pipe networks.Optimisation of network design using novel surrogate modelling techniques to capture the behaviour of components with significantly reduced computational cost.Development of an experimental rig, including design and regular contact with suppliers to ensuretimely and high quality manufacture.Communication of research outcomes and defence of research methods to a wide range of stakeholders.Production of technical publications and presentations to disseminate the findings of the researchproject to the wider project team and to a more general scientific audience. Show less Responsible for planning and running group teaching sessions of up to 120 students. This includespractical lab based sessions, problem based tutorial sessions and the delivery of new material in lectures. This involved:Preparation and delivery of teaching material for undergraduate and postgraduate engineeringmodules.Preparation and review of assessment material for undergraduate engineering modules.Assessment of presentations for engineering design projects, including providing feedback directlyto students.Delivery of practical sessions for small groups of students, including adaptation of the sessions forremote learning during the COVID pandemic.
