As a fellow, I engaged in over 100 hours of hospital shadowing in various departments and specialties. I also participated in volunteer opportunities. By being a part of this overseas program, I was able to fully immerse myself in and appreciate the Portuguese and Azorean culture. The opportunity of traveling to Faial Island and witnessing the European health care system was a revelation of gigantic proportions for me. During this fellowship, I gained clarity on how much the teaching aspect of medicine means to me. The physicians and hospital personnel helped me realize how much fun I can have as they taught me the intricateness of their individual crafts. Their impact on me has bolstered and instilled a greater dedication to gain as much knowledge as possible while being able to simplify my knowledge so anyone no matter their level of education, language barriers, or socioeconomic backgrounds will be able to understand. I was extremely impressed by the Portuguese’s ability to simplify complex concepts though there was a language disparity. My experience in Horta has encouraged a want in me to master the skill of teaching as well as master the art of medicine. This passion I have to teach and master the art of medicine will promote the evolution in the field of medicine as I further my knowledge base. Show less
