Project Manager on the Gatwick Flood Attenuation Scheme.Creation of 186,000 m3 Flood Storage Area within Gatwick Airport:The Main Activities are as follows:· Construction of a flow limiting control structure within the Gatwick Stream upstream of the airport, designed to restrict the flows downstream of the structure to 15m3/s. This will be a concrete structure incorporating cast iron / steel twin control gates.· Excavation of c.160,000m3 of soil from the fields in the land alongside the Gatwick Stream immediately upstream of a proposed control structure, bunding of the excavated area, and then restoration of the whole site to g razing land which will, together with the formation of embankments along the western and eastern boundaries of the flood storage area, create a storage ‘reservoir’ capable of holding c.186,000m3 of floodwater· Removal of 150,000m3 of the excavated material from the site.· Diversion of a section of the Gatwick Stream and engineering of embankments to form a floodwater inlet to the storage area during high river flows and a simple outlet structure upstream of the control structure for water to return as flows recede.· Construction of a pumping station adjacent to the control structure to remove water collecting from direct rainfall in the storage area to the Gatwick stream as well as residual flood water.· Construction of a vehicular maintenance access route to the control structure, which is to be incorporated into the new embankment.· Construction of a single storey 6m x 4m control building next to the maintenance access route.· Extension of the permissive footpath network, including a new footbridge over the Gatwick Stream.· Landscape and Ecological enhancement measures including restoration of the site to grazing land, new tree planting (approx. 2000 trees) and reinstatement of hedgerows (approx. 540 linear metres). Show less Project Manager on Days for Main Runway Rehabilitation Project:The project involved resurfacing an area of 400,000m² - with approximately 70,000t of asphalt. Around 1.900 runway and taxiway lights, fed by 530km of electrical cabling, will also be replaced. Carrying out work on Gatwick's main runway was a major challenge with up to 53 aircraft landing and taking off every hour. In order to keep the runway operational all resurfacing and associated works from March to December 2012 was undertaken during possessions. With just seven working hours VolkerFitzpatrick removed and replaced about 130m of runway at a time. While the runway rehabilitation was being undertaken it provided an opportunity for other improvements to be delivered for example: Installation of a new aeronautical ground lighting control system, Ehancement of the existing runway guard bar system, Replacement of cabling and switches, replacement of Constant Current Regulators, Provision of a new secondary duct system within the pavementProvision of additional pit and duct systems Show less
