      Intern @ Production - Hull

Attached to ST Marine Benoi Hull (Production) Department to study and understand the hull processes involved in new shipbuilding including: fabrication process of hull materials, block assembly, block erection as well as hull fitting. During the internship, I assisted the Hull Department team in the study of 2 Kaizen Projects for productivity gains: feasibility of implementing welding robots in the workshop, and possibility of raised floorboards with a new foundation design on board vessels. I also studied the process flow of the entire hull construction process and generated 5 other ideas to improve productivity in the hull department through implementation of robotics/automation along with other solutions which reduce the cycle time through methods including elimination of the need for in-house fabrication. The 5 ideas I came up with are: Smart Conveyor System (SCS), RFID Plate & Profile Management, Automated Retrieval of Material System (ARMS), Hydraulic Sinkable Workshop Floor and Commercial Off The Shelf Procurements. Lead Ambassador

Served in the capacity of Lead Ambassador (Marine Technology) for the Newcastle University Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP). My role involved working closely with faculty ahead of the OIP to plan the academic programme for students coming from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), as well as organising evening events and day trips. During the 3 weeks in which the SIT students were at Newcastle University, I ensured that the programme ran smoothly by adapting on the ground to unforeseen circumstances, while also addressing any welfare or other concerns the students had. Jun 2017 - Jul 2019
      President

The Interdisciplinary Engineering Projects Team (also known as Marine Projects Society) focuses on engineering projects, including but not limited to the design and construction of marine vehicles and solar cars. By bringing together students of all engineering disciplines and computing science in a massive interdisciplinary effort, the society accomplishes its goals through well executed system integration. In the academic year 2017/18, we focused on building a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Thus formed a competitive arm under our society’s wings: the NU ROVers. With a team comprising engineers (civil, electrical, marine, mechanical) and computer scientists, we forged the way in the integrated School of Engineering’s first cross-discipline project, successfully building a prototype ROV despite the entire team being new to the whole thing. In the academic year 2018/19, we continued efforts to bring a ROV to the MATE International Competition. Leading an team of experienced individuals and passionate newcomers, we took interdisciplinary projects to a whole new level with better cooperation. As a result, our team qualified for the MATE International ROV Championships held in Kingsport, Tennessee - a first for our univeristy and one of 70 odd teams to qualify out of over 700+ worldwide. At the international championships, we won the 'Guts & Glory' award for our tenacious spirit in never surrendering to obstacles and going through hardships together as a team, proving our ability to persevere and keep our hand down regardless. Jul 2018 - Sept 2018
Intern @ Engineering Design Centre - Hull

Interned at ST Engineering Marine (STEM) - Engineering Design Centre (EDC) Hull. During these 10 weeks, I was tasked to look into the performance of various high speed craft hull forms and - following that - to analyse the potential for improvement of an existing planing hull form developed by STEM. As part of the process, I had the freedom to develop my own internship plan and crafted a comprehensive project on stepped planing hulls.Titled "Investigation into the Hydrodynamic Performance of High Speed Craft", the project involved 3 phases: Literature Review, Theoretical Analysis and CFD Validation. By first studying existing research for planing craft with a particular focus on stepped hulls, I was able to draw some useful conclusions which helped to define the scope. A theoretical analysis was then carried out through the adaptation of known semi-empirical methods into a Python program which served to produce a theoretical optimum step design for the STEM planing hull. An attempt was then made to conduct a validation of the results with a CFD package - this was, however, not fully completed due to limitations in terms of time and software.Whilst on the internship, I also got the opportunity to familiarise with industrial Naval Architecture software such as AVEVA and RAPID.
