  • About me

    E. L. (Betsy) Smith, PhD Pensacola, FL - Author, Speaker and Advocacy Trainer

  • Education

    • Texas A&M University

      1980 - 1985
MEd, PhD Psychology/Social Work; Higher Education Administration

I began my undergraduate work at The University of Texas at the ripe old age of 25. When I decided to work on my doctorate (at 35), I quit my job, took out all of my retirement and went to school full time for 2 years. It was two of the best years of my life!

  • Experience

    • Texas A&M University

      Sept 1983 - Aug 1985
Assistant Director, Center for Community Education at Texas A&M University

While teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, I served as the editor of the statewide community education newsletter.

    • Pensacola State College

      Jun 1986 - Jan 1988
Dean, Pensacola State College Continuing Education

To build relationships with incoming high school graduates, I created Kids College, which fast became a revenue generator as well as a recruitment tool. For those who were still young at heart, I also generated more revenue and brand recognition by initiating what continues to be a thriving Elder Hostel, now known as Roads Scholar.

    • Pensacola Junior College

      Sept 1986 - Jul 2005
      Associate Vice President Institutional Advancement

In addition to supervising the fundraising program that raised $4.5 million, I also: created, produced, and hosted a monthly TV show on the local public television station; was the co-creator and chair of the CLASS customer service initiative; and created, implemented, and evaluated its strategic marketing plan.

    • Pensacola State College

      Jun 1988 - Jun 1997

I truly loved leading this health-related campus. My relator strength enabled me to build strong on-campus relationships, as well as ones between the campus and the community. During my tenure, results included a new building, increased programs and enrollment, and so much more. In response to a request from the community, I created the Downtown Center to meet business needs; and also created a community art program held there.

    • E.L. Smith Consulting

      Jan 2004 - now
Leadership Development Expert and Training and Program Leader

If you are thinking about engaging a coach, I invite you to contact me and schedule a complimentary session to determine whether we are a good fit. Here are some questions to consider:Are you doing work that brings you joy? Are you appreciated and rewarded for your contribution? Is it time to consider a change? Are you ready to take the next leap in your career? In addition to one-on-one coaching, I deliver dynamic talks, executive and leadership coaching and training/workshop facilitation, and custom programs tailored to your needs. As promised in the summary above, here are a few illustrations of the work I do and the results achieved. What do I want? I want all women to be empowered and to love and appreciate themselves. If I could wave a magic wand I would transfer my characteristics of self-worth, confidence, and courage to other women by a mere touch. Since magic wands don’t actually exist, I coach women to claim their value and leverage their human capital – because the first step to confidence and courage is to choose to be powerful and love and appreciate yourself. How do I work? Workshops are one of my favorite platforms – both online and offline – having spoken to groups from 10-500 about leadership, confidence, and courage. What makes me the expert? In many of the roles I’ve held, I was one of if not “the” first woman leader; and I understand what it takes for career women to get a raise, promotion, special project, corner office, or to merely be heard at work. Having overcome the obstacles myself, I know on a very personal level how to help women create and implement strategies for defining what success means to them and then pursuing and achieving it. With graduate level training in negotiation and experience serving as the chief negotiator in collective bargaining, I encourage and coach women to find their voice and shift their thinking from negotiating to having a conversation. Executive Partner - Leadership Development for Nurses at The Shift Change Coaching Group

We provided professional coaching to assist nurses to move from surviving to thriving and help healthcare institutions address the nursing shortage. Rather than developing strategies to throw more money at the problem, we worked with their intrinsic needs – life balance, establishing boundaries, self-care before care of others, living their passion, and identifying their values.
