  Development engineer

  My career as a development engineer was focused on automated manufacturing/inspection of weapons components. We developed knowledged-based software tools to interrogate 3D CAD models and produce part programs to drive inspection equipment (Coordinate Measuring Machines, for example).

  I am leading a team of mechanical engineers and designers to produce a suite of world-class neutron scattering instruments for the Second Target Station at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We help scientists take their vision for these instruments and turn them into miniature materials research laboratories which can address a wide range of scientific questions. We develop tools and techniques that allow people to remotely perform work in hazardous environments. This are typically radiation environments but we also have designed systems for space, battlefield, and underwater environments. Our group gets involved in designs of new facilities that will require remote handling capabilities as well as developing systems that can be used to solve problems in existing hazardous environments.
