Biology DepartmentWhile I attended SDSU, I not only instructed many biology courses including ornithology, general biology, and human anatomy, but I also volunteered my time to the ornithology course. For four years, I volunteered as a field guide for the weekly birding trips across San Diego County for the ornithology course. During field trips, I shared my knowledge of local flora and fauna, and my experiences as a wildlife biologist. Many of these field trip locations have nesting avian species of special concern, such as least Bell’s vireo, California gnatcatcher, Belding’s savannah sparrow, light-footed clapper rail and loggerhead shrike. The natural history of these species were highlighted to show the students how urban development can impact populations of native birds. Show less

      Biologist

I designed and conducted bird population sampling projects using point count methodology for the inventorying of various Department Ecological Reserves. I also designed and conducted species specific population sampling studies for multiple state and federal special status species that inhabit department lands in southern California. These efforts also included the interpretation of results and drafting of reports for my supervisors to enhance management decisions. A larger portion of my duties included the daily monitoring and managing of all wildlife inhabiting the properties under my stewardship and the oversight of my field assistants. This included monitoring watering holes, both native springs and manmade water sources, and maintaining access and ensuring the safety of the wildlife using those water sources. Removing of old barbed-wire fences and overseeing the construction of new straight-wire fencing to ensure the safe movement of wildlife. I was also responsible for reporting sign of mountain lions and deer movements to the Department's Mountain Lion and Big Horn Sheep Specialist. My duties also included monitoring invasive plant species and large removal projects to enhance habitat for wildlife. These included herbicide applications, removal of invasive water plants from lagoons, and a large eucalyptus grove removal project. My duties on these projects included pre-planning meetings with my supervisor, implementation of work plans and oversight of field assistants. Show less

      Biologist
    • Ecology and Environment, Inc

      Feb 2008 - Nov 2015
      Senior Wildlife Biologist

My role working as a wildlife biologist on solar, wind, and pipeline projects include initial environmental feasibility analyses to determine potential environmental impacts, design and implementation of pre-construction wildlife surveys, oversight of field crews, data management, and interpretation of results and drafting of potential project impacts to wildlife and recommendations to minimize and mitigate impacts. I use my extensive wildlife sampling experience to design, conduct, and oversee field personnel implementing sampling designs. Specifically, pygmy rabbit surveys, songbird nesting surveys and point counts using distance sampling, raptor migration counts, aerial and terrestrial raptor nest surveys, greater sage-grouse and sharp-tailed grouse lek surveys, and analysis of acoustic bat surveys.During the pre-construction phase of the Ruby Pipeline Project, much of my work involved leading field crews conducting raptor nest surveys (aerial and terrestrial), migratory bird nest surveys, pygmy rabbit surveys, and greater sage-grouse surveys. The Ruby Pipeline Project spans four states in the western U.S., and involved interactions with four state wildlife agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, two U.S. Forest Service and seven U.S. Bureau of Land Management districts. This included survey design, sampling technique training of field personnel, field crew scheduling, database management and QA/QC of all field data, determination of seasonal and spatial restrictions, and report writing for Federal and State Agency review. During the 2010 field season, field teams recorded and monitored status and nest outcomes for more than 1,400 raptor and common raven nests, and 400 migratory bird nests so I could track the areas that pipeline construction could commence.
