      Phd candidate, music

The thesis, "Australian art song: Pedagogical strategies framed for singers and singing teachers" investigated the most suitable pedagogical issues and frames by which both singers and singing teachers might learn, teach and ultimately perform Australian contemporary art song repertoire more easily. The multi-dimensional perspective of the research is underpinned by a theoretical frame with an overarching pedagogical focus, drawing together the major scholarly influences on the practice-led, practice-based aspects which inform the three-phase research design. Findings of each phase informed the next, resulting in a bank of pedagogical learning and teaching strategies to engage singers and singing teachers in contemporary art song. Show less

Australian music is part of every Australian’s heritage and as such, research into and discussion of the many different genres, musics and influences that have shaped and continue to shape music in Australia today are important aspects of music to explore. Diverse research interests of those in the Australian Music Study Group include Australian art song, light music, percussion music, clarinet and saxophone music, and music of Australian composers, including that of Margaret Sutherland, Fritz Hart and Malcolm Williamson. Topics of interest embrace Aboriginality in Australian film music; the collaborative process between composers and performers; music in Australian colonial society (1788-1900) and Australian music history. The MSA Australian Group currently runs primarily as an e-mail discussion group. Other study groups may exist among the group, at a State Chapter level and/or at Chapter events and at National Conferences, through communication via the Australian Music Study Group's web page and if there is interest, the development of a FB page.
