I worked in the Mine Engineering department for 12 weeks, focusing on the development of computational models for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations. In my time in Tara Mines, I proved that the traditional scaled distance laws for predicting peak particle velocity (PPV) did not hold for larger PPV values. I developed a predictor based on machine learning and neural networks, which was written in Python.I also completed computer aided drawing (CAD) courses with Deswik, and worked with CAD on a near daily basis. I carried out my final year research project in Prof. Yurii Gun'ko's research group in Trinity College Dublin. My project was based on the development of multimodal, magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites, and the investigation of their role in biomedical applications. The project resulted in successful formation of magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites, which are made of non-toxic, biocompatible materials. In this time, I gained skills in synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques, including, but not limited to, electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, vibrational sample magnetometry, dynamic light scattering and zeta potentiometric techniques.
