Activities and Societies: SHU Sail and Windsurf SHU Hobby Soc My degree gave me specialist railway knowledge in signalling, geotechnics and electrical theory. I know how an auto-transformer works, but I also know what in meant and can do (to a moderate level) control tables and I know what is meant by signalling diagrams and circuits, and can design a track layout for 3-aspect, 4-aspect, splitting distant, plain line, plain line with two junctions, 4-aspect territory in three-aspect line, etc.... May 2015 - Aug 2015
      Signal engineer

I worked on a resignalling project where TPWS has to be installed at a major London location. We, as a consultancy, had to provide advice, guidance and expertise on how the rail sector is developing to a government sector entity, to make the best value for money on a long-term project that we are just a small piece of the jigsaw.

      Aug 2015 - Aug 2016
      Trainee signalling designer

I learnt about RRI interlocking in a experience-based setting with signalling design using Bentley's PLANS software.I also gained a very wide experience about Network Rail's process of issuing and receiving of source documents, as well as multi-disciplinary areas that relate to the signalling sector: for example, track in the form of IBJs.My logical thinking is helping me gain a wide and vast grasp of engineering in the rail sector.

      Oct 2017 - Feb 2024

In this role, I'm analysing the current and new power demands on the traction power electrification networks across Great Britain, as a resonse to an increse or change in timetabling.I'm also collaborating with the DfT and other stakeholders to electrify more lines in Great Britain, including the extension of the Midland Main Line from Kettering and Corby to Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield, plus many areas in the Scottish Lowlands and areas to the north of Glasgow, including lines to Aberdeen and Inverness. Show less In this role, I was responsible for reviewing and signing off new and change of use signalling products that manufacturers want to supply to the rail industry. I acted as Lead Reviewer for such things as a change of use certificate for the Trackside Radio Control Units (TRCUs), which was for the RETB system in the Far North of Scotland route. This was to include the addition of powered points (S&C), when manoeuvring through a passing loop, increasing the line speed of the passsing loop and reducing the overall time taken to get from Inverness to Thurso/Wick and Kyle of Lochalsh.I also was tasked with updating the incident database to include such paramaters as severity and repeatability of types of faults/asset failures, to enable the Technical Authority to analyse common trends in asset failures and utilise the Design for Reliability (DfR) framework to reduce the amount of common failures of assets on the network, improving efficency, reliability and operational capabilities of the railway. Show less In this role, I in a rewarding career working on scheme development resignalling schemes and detailed design of location case wirings and interlockings. My prior experience of detailed design on Wessex has formed the underpinning knowledge of my profession and this is continually being developed to form a cohearant and detailed knowledge of the arcitecture and agreed methods of electrical wiring design within the signalling indutsry: these will include alterations to exsisting wiring, although we are not directly changing the electrical wiring of the part of the system (650V and above: that's E&P's domain). This is a role in which different thought process from different team members need to be combined together, thus leading to a collaborative team effort, in order to get the project finished on time, on track and within budget.
