    • Leeds university union

      Apr 2011 - Jul 2014

This was a one year paid internship with the Community department at Leeds University Union. My role is based on strategy promotion, and means that I work on projects across the organisation to promote the work that the Community Department do. This includes running volunteer opportunities (recruiting, training and managing volunteers), developing campaigns to get students to engage with their local community, such as taking part in the NUS Connect/Bite the Ballot National Voter Registration Day #NVRD campaign - running promotional events and talking to students about issues that matter to them. I also have to provide reports to senior management about the teams progress and whether we are reaching our targets. On the projects I have been working on we have exceeded our KPIs for the past 4 months. These targets have included the amount of active volunteers, volunteer hours, events run, website hits and amount of students spoken to about certain subjects. In addition to this I have experience of promoting campaigns and activities to students and local residents through a variety of means. This has included creating promotional leaflets, posters, targeted online communications and face-to-face promotion. I have also represented the Community Department at external conferences, such as the 2014 Student Engagement Conference. During my time here, Leeds University Union were going through a strategic review, and I was part of the Community Strategy action group. This group met regularly to brainstorm and plan ways in which they could respond to the research that was done on students in relation to the local community. I have also had training in a variety of areas. These include;•VAL Developing a Volunteer Program •Directory of Social Change Project Management •MiDAS Minibus training •Excel formula and pivot table training •Institute of Fundraising Award - Introductory Certificate in Fundraising •Customer Service Training Network•Facilitator Training Show less I ran kitchen shifts, generally supervising four other members of staff. Preparing and cooking a wide range of foods, sandwiches and salads. Cleaning, opening and closing the kitchen and maintaining high standards of hygiene. I also had to complete necessary paperwork so as to comply with health and safety laws. Helping think up new ideas for seasonal menu changes, maintaining consistency of service and dealing with any complaints efficiently and professionally. I have also had to help train new members of staff, teaching them how to make meals, how to serve them and how to clean the kitchen properly. I have also received some bar training as part of my job at Leeds University Union. Show less
