Building Environments is a required course for 3rd-year students in the B.Arch program and teaches the applied science of calibrating building environments. Students are taught passive systems as the first measure followed by an exploration of active systems. The goal of the course is for students to gain a fundamental knowledge of “how buildings work” from a services and systems perspective, and develop an ability to engage in the design, drawing, and analysis of each related system. Also, students are expected to develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the oftentimes tenuous relationship between the quantifiable data of hard scientific principles and the subjectivity of the ideal of human comfort and its perception of metrics.
