      Senior project engineer

Delivery of automated manufacturing systems from concept design through to full manufacturing capability including the developed of project specifications, plans and acceptance documentation.

    • Vanderlande

      Apr 2005 - Nov 2010
      Senior systems engineer

Led the design, specification and tendering for complex warehouse automation systems. Provided design support to project engineering departments during installation, commissioning, and production ramp up.Commissioned and monitored research projects to develop innovative automated logistics solutions to meet specific customer needs (examples include high speed sorting of fragile items and supermarket direct to customer only store automation).Key Achievements:Development of the UK’s first home grocery delivery picking centre for a UK supermarket (worth circa £5m with a further 3 sites ordered in the following 24 months). The concept allows the client to fulfil home delivery orders from a separate facility allowing traditional stores to free up floor space to focus on in-store shoppers.Development and installation of an online distribution centre for UK fashion retailor (£25m) including the first use in the UK of highly dynamic automated storage and picking combined with robotic palletising. System as built was capable of delivering 184 million items a year across 450+ stores and home delivery orders with next day delivery. Show less

    • Mtc - manufacturing technology centre

      Nov 2010 - Dec 2020
      Chief engineer - intelligent automation

Formed and led the Intelligent Automation group that developed innovative technologies and applications of industrial robotics and automation for the manufacturing industry with a particular focus on the adoption of these technologies by small and medium sized companies.Key Achievements:Development of MTC’s project management process, graduate development program and delivery of circa £5m state of the art automation equipment on-time and budget within first 12 months of the organisations start-up (including complete automated production facility for major aerospace prime)Recruitment of a high performing research team (peaking at over 45 direct reports and a further 50 in-direct) including graduate, post-doctorate and experienced engineers. Developed graduate and early career engineers to hold senior roles both within MTC, leading automation suppliers and end usersSustained performance of the group achieving on target revenues and budgets, 100% on time delivery and high levels of technical governanceSecured funding from UK Government and European Union for collaborative R&D projects (largest UK project £10m, largest EU project £6m)Led the development of industrially funded research projects ranging from £50k to £2m whilst managing client expectations and commercial risk to MTCManaged the on time & budget delivery of a complex project portfolio with multiple stakeholders. Provided technical leadership to ensure projects were delivered to customer expectations and technical excellenceDelivered keynote seminar & training sessions and thought leadership articles on the development and use of industrial robotics (with particular focus on small & medium enterprises) for national and international audiencesContributed to the development of the EU robotics strategy and creation of first UK robotics strategy. Provided evidence to UK Government & Parliamentary committees on the use of industrial robotics Show less

      Independent robotics and automation consultant

Implementing your first robot system can be daunting but I can help you navigate through the process from deciding if a robot is right for you, selecting your robot supplier and system integrator through to getting the best out of your robot system.I also work with robot companies to develop their products to the needs of industrial users and I work with professional institutions, trade bodies and interest groups to develop the UK's industrial robotics strategy and promote their uptake by UK manufacturers. • Cranfield university

      Sept 2021 - now
      Visiting professor

Horizontal Innovation (HI) is all around us but few of us ever really give it any thought and it often happens by chance. But HI has the potential to solve some of societies biggest challenges by sharing knowledge and experience through collaborating across disciplines (and not just within engineering). Challenges such as simply improving our engineering and manufacturing processes through to securing complex supply chains in a volatile world, feeding a growing and ageing population whilst dealing with a crisis in our planet's climate. The recent pandemic has proven how cross-sectoral thinking can face these challenges. My Visiting Professor role with Cranfield University (funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering) aims to encourage cross discipline thinking within Cranfield's manufacturing courses but also within the Universities staff within the manufacturing department, across engineering disciplines and schools. • Satellite applications catapult

      Sept 2021 - now
      Robotics development lead

By 2030, the launch and deployment of satellites will have become commonplace with complex constellations and structures delivering services and products for use on earth and beyond. Beyond this, the construction of larger, more complex space craft is expected. To enable commercial viability of both the assembly and maintenance of these space craft, robotics will play an increasing role in in-orbit servicing and manufacturing (IOSM). My role at the Satellite Applications Catapult is to lead the robotics team as we develop a dedicated facility that provides a proving ground for companies to validate their technologies and in doing so, prove their flight worthiness. Critically for spin-outs, start-ups and SMEs this will also prove their investment potential. Show less
