This leadership position is responsible for the leadership and operational management of Foodbank WA's Nutrition Education Team. Foodbank WA has been improving food insecurity and delivering nutrition education throughout the state since 1994. This role leads the Nutrition Education Team (previously Healthy Food for All team) which includes Dietitians, Nutritionists and Health Promotion professionals to facilitate a range of healthy eating and cooking programs for all ages and settings across WA, including the School Breakfast Program. Show less Superhero Foods has been my creative project since 2015. Superhero Foods are a unique suite of characters and messages which aim to increase the dietary intake of school aged children in accordance with National Dietary Guidelines. The initiative encompasses a suite of free nutrition resources that support schools and health professionals to deliver and promote nutrition to children in a fun and engaging way.The concept has been evolving since 2013, when breakfast placemats with healthy eating messages were developed initially to be used in Foodbank WA’s School Breakfast Program. The initiative has grown since that time with over 100 highly engaging nutrition education resources. The resources provide a fresh approach to teaching nutrition and cooking for teachers and health professionals. Housed on a dedicated website, the Superhero Foods HQ www.superherofoodhq.org.au, over 25,000 resources have been downloaded since March 2018. Resources include lesson plans, posters, recipe booklets, game/collector cards, clip art, newsletter inserts, breakfast placemats and a storybook “Joe’s Epic Breakfast Adventure”. The website provides free access to the resources.Linked to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating the Superhero Foods characters have been developed with the input from stakeholders including teachers and health professionals. Superhero Foods has become the foremost nutrition education concept within the Foodbank WA’s Food Sensations schools nutrition education and cooking initiative.Through the Superhero Foods project I have written two story books, “Joe’s Epic Breakfast Adventure” and “Let’s Eat”. I have had the absolute pleasure of working with the amazing artist and illustrator Ian Coate on the books and also character and resource development for the Superhero Foods initiative. Other roles at Foodbank WA have included Food Sensations School Team Lead and Physical Activity Promotion Coordinator. Show less
