  Gingivais the clinical term for gums. Gingiva is a part of oral mucosa that covers the alveolar processes of the maxilla and mandible and finishes at the neck of each tooth. It is only one of the periodontal tissue that under healthy conditions is directly visible upon inspection.The gingiva can be divided into three types - 1. Free gingiva 2. Attached gingiva3. Interdental papillaThe dividing line between the free gingiva and the attached gingiva is the free gingival groove which runs parallel to the margin of the gingiva at a distance of 0.5-1.5 mm.
