      Jan 2012 - Nov 2013

Worked on purifying an immunomodulatory protein in E. coli for the purpose of creating better biomaterials for medical implants. CD200 is a naturally expressed protein that inhibits macrophage activation. As a protein engineer for the lab, I created an E. coli expression system to produce biotinylated CD200 to coat biomaterials. The goal of the Liu Lab is to create novel materials that use both micro and nanoscale topography as well as biomimetic protein coatings to drastically reduce the host inflammatory response to medical implants.Skills used: western blotting, polyacrylamide gel manufacturing, electrophoresis, bacterial culture, DNA extraction, cell-transformation, protein induction, size-exclusion chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, avidin-biotin material functionalization, immunohistochemistry, tissue prep Show less
