  My master’s research involved the measurement of selected welfare indicators in cattle herds related to extensive systems with different percentages of tree coverage. I studied and reinterpreted the Welfare Quality® protocol for dairy cattle, in order to analyse my results. In addition, I performed landscape analyses using Geographic Information Systems and obtained percentages of tree coverage, as well as distribution patterns. This research obtained novel information on the relation between silvopastoral systems, animal welfare and environmental management and became influential for the development of current research developed by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. This institution is one of the collaborating centres of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Show less

  During my PhD, working under the supervision of Prof. Clive Phillips, I investigated the effects of mining machinery noise on small mammals and reptiles, using wild mice and blue-tongued lizards as animal models. This research allowed me to acquire specific skills, such as experience in the measurement of fecal corticosterone and the observation of stress – related behaviours during video replay. Likewise, I developed a deeper understanding of complex statistical techniques such as General Linear Models and Mixed Models. From my work, two original papers have been published and two more await revision. My PhD experience allowed me to expand my concept of animal welfare and sustainability to the health and behaviour of wild animals, which are also good indicators of the success of failure of alternative farming systems.
