As an associate Research Engineer within the Materials & Processes team I have been exposed to the entire composite design, manufacture and test cycle. My work has led me to develop strengths in assessing customer requirements, creating effective project plans, developing manufacturing instructions and executing/overseeing required manufacturing activities. The Materials & Processes team at the NCC operates as a team of multidisciplinary engineers who are comfortable taking on poorly defined challenges from all sectors and manufacturing processes. As a result my time within this group has provided me with excellent knowledge around composite manufacturing, particularly around resin transfer moulding (RTM), liquid resin infusion (LRI), prepreg layup and thermoplastic moulding. The developmental nature of the research we perform has also given me insight to the latest technology and methodologies developed around products in the automotive, aerospace/defence, renewables (Hydrogen) and construction sectors.Recently I have broadened my knowledge by beginning a secondment to the Digital Engineering team at the NCC, contributing to the Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI) initiative and 5G-encode project. I am involved in developing capability and knowledge to aid in the adoption of digital methods into UK manufacturing. My area of work has specifically been around developing and implementing systems to automate valve closure during the resin infusion process, making use of 5G connectivity and internet of things (IoT) technology to to react to live sensor data. Our ambition is to continue with the digitisation of equipment and processes within the NCC and wider UK industry, with the aim of improving part quality and reducing manufacturing time and cost. Show less Completed a 2-year graduate scheme at the NCC Bristol within the following departments:Concept development (rotation 1): Assisted in creating a structured concept development process for engineers to follow when engaging with customers to ensure developed solutions comprehensively meet the requirements set. I also gained valuable experience using design and simulation engineering software tools (CATIA, Hypermesh) and assisted in the design of a technology demonstrator for the overmoulding process.Project management (rotation 2): Automotive and Rail Business Unit): Led teams of engineers to realise the objectives of a diverse range of projects: - Managed a project with the focus on developing a high temperature RTM capability within the NCC to support the interests of UK industry. - Led an international consortium of engineering businesses to establish a supply chain, develop, manufacture and test a novel basalt reinforced thermoplastic material in various architectures for application in the automotive sector. - Led a team of technicians to manufacture critical load bearing structures for an extreme high performance vehicle.Materials & Processes (rotation 3 & 4): Worked within an innovative team with diverse responsibilities (process selection and development through to prototyping and data acquisition). I conducted material down selection activities according to customer requirements and wrote manufacturing instructions for development parts. I gained hands on experience casting thermoset components, laying woven reinforcement preforms and manufacturing highly complex components via RTM processes. I programmed a digital tool using LabVIEW with the aim of encouraging the acquisition of important manufacturing data at the NCC. The tool has a simple to use GUI and enables simultaneous acquisition of temperature and strain in-process data. The program has enabled engineers to log the history of their components and make data driven decisions. Show less

Best Overall Team Performance Award Engineering Education Scheme Wales (STEM) Apr 2013 My team competed in the EESW competition against over 50 other schools from my region to develop the best solution to a real life engineering problem. Attained the "Best Overall Team Performance" award after producing a project paper and working scale model, and finally presenting our project to a panel of judges. Our engineering problem was to design a vibration testing rig for the testing of oil bore sensor instruments, we were partnered with Guardian Global Technologies.
