  I took part time care of an incredibly special 10 year old girl with Rett Syndrome and her 5 year old brother. Rett Syndrome is a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops, causing a progressive inability to use muscles for eyes, body movements and speech. Responsibilities included feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, managing seizures, administering medication, transportation, and managing her wheelchair.

Studied flowering phenology of tussock grasses in relation to nutrient availability & climate change in the Takahe Valley. Conducted preliminary research on mechanisms to uniformly quantify flowering & fruiting of specific plant species relating to the abundance of bird species & pests. Assisted with habitat restoration and revegetation of New Zealand’s native coastal forest within the reserve.   Title: “Distribution and behaviour of sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, over the Otago submarine canyons, New Zealand”Synopsis:Led 4 field seasons, three offshore of Otago and one off Kaikōura.Boat-based visual and acoustic surveys were conducted over submarine canyons with the aim of tracking male sperm whales and obtaining data on their identity, location, observed surface behaviour, acoustic (diving) behaviour, and body length.Managed all aspects of fieldwork: organising trip logistics, health & safety, maintaining research equipment, coordinating & instructing volunteers, and collecting data.   Expert marine mammal observer

  During the March 2023 and 2024 Sail GP race events, I assisted in mitigating disturbances and harm to Hector’s dolphins and other marine mammals over the race and practice days. This was essential as the event was conducted in the Lyttelton Harbour - a Marine Mammal Sanctuary. As an expert observer I carried out the management plan by diligently observing the course area, before and during the races, for any signs of Hector’s and reported to my supervisor accordingly.
