      Reading Tutor

Working as a reading tutor for the College Skills Seminar under Dr. Greg Hazard (head of BYU-Idaho’s Academic Support Center), I helped at-risk students develop their reading and study skills and potentially matriculate. As part of a team of tutors, I supported, supervised, and helped assess students as a peer-mentor while they used the Center’s facilities to learn effective study skills and strategies and improve their reading vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and efficiency.

      Jun 2002 - Aug 2002
      French Language and Culture Intern

As a language and culture intern at this family-run Best Western hotel in Southern Belgium (site of WWII's "Battle of the Bulge"), I served at the front desk as an office receptionist and assistant, aided the chef in the restaurant, waited tables, and assisted in hotel maintenance, repairs, and cleaning. These tasks required extensive communication in French.

Show less At BYU’s multimedia language resource lab (ARCLITE), I was a curriculum developer, instructional designer, grant writer, and consultant in language instruction and curriculum development. I developed teaching curricula and accompanying multimedia resources for language instruction, wrote grants for research monies, and worked with various teams to accomplish these tasks and to train professors and students from various institutions including UC-Davis, University of Chicago, and BYU in how to perform them as well.I worked with peers in a variety of team-based projects, including as co-project manager, budget director, and producer for a $20,000 grant to develop curriculum and multimedia resources for teaching Romanian language and culture. Structured around the narrative-based film our team created, our products were later developed into BYU’s current Romanian 101 course.Under faculty supervision, Brant Stewart and I hired teammembers based on specific skillsets; prepared the scope and sequence for instruction and resource development; wrote the script; and organized travel arrangements, in-country logistics, and teammembers’ onsite and offsite duties. Working together with Brant, I also provided regular follow-up to ensure post-production tasks were completed and within budget, maintained members’ morale and motivation, and led the team in finding and implementing innovative solutions. I created and taught a composite humanities course modeled after BYU's introductory and western humanities survey courses to help Ivy Hall nontraditional students acquire the knowledge and interpretive skills necessary to pass the CLEP Humanities exam and earn general education credit. I developed strategies and materials to engage my students for three hours in the evening twice each week, helped them see how the material related to their careers as nurses, and encouraged out-of-class preparation for the exam without the normal classroom incentives of credit through assignments and assessments (course credit only came through the CLEP exam).
