    • Hadrians Special Needs Primary School

      Sept 2010 - May 2011
      Volunteer Teaching Assistant

I spent a total of 85 hours there over the course of the academic year. Each child attending the school had severe learning difficulties and profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). I conducted research to help better understand the children I was assisting. The children in my class had a range of physical and learning disabilities, the level of care and learning assistance each child needed was tailored to suit their individual needs. I had the fortunate experience to work one to one with every child in my class over the course of my placement. I worked with children who suffered from disabilities such as Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Motor Neurone Disease and ADHD. As the needs of each child differed greatly I studied their individual education plan at the start of each day. These consisted of medical notes, occupational, psychological and educational records. The information provided me with background insight for the level of assistance they needed in specific areas and also of their specific targets to focus on. Show less

    • Skils4U North East ltd

      Sept 2011 - Jan 2012
      Volunteer Teaching Assistant

This organisation aimed to assist young people ages 14 – 19 years who were at risk of underachieving. Skills4U was a very different environment to any generic mainstream education institution. My role was to assist the teachers in helping them to engage and educate their students. This included a level 1/level 2 in basic maths and English and also a vocational qualification such as bricklaying, mechanics, cooking skills. The students could no longer function in mainstream education due to learning difficulties and anti-social behaviour; some of whom regularly displayed challenging behaviour. This was something which I was not initially used to. After a few weeks of attending this placement I began to learn how to deal with each individual when they began to behave in a destructive manner. I learnt ways to calm them down and move their attention back to the task at hand. As this was my second university placement, I was also given more responsibility. I produced my own lesson plans which I delivered to the students. Show less

I initially started my employment at Hallgarth Hotel as a breakfast supervisor. I was in charge of my own staff running the busy breakfast service which provides a high standard of customer service. After a short time, I further progressed to the role of a supervisor where I was responsible for running weddings and functions as well as working some shifts as acting duty manager. I was also involved in writing staff training plans of which I delivered to the staff. On returning to university I no longer have these responsibilities. I now work on a casual basis as a food and beverage assistant. Show less

    • Northeast Wellbeing

      Mar 2016 - now
      Research Assistant

Northeast wellbeing (NEW) is a charity which offers bespoke support to primary schools in Darlington. The main areas of support for children are counselling, speech and language therapy, SEN Support and Family Support. The main focus of NEW is to promote child development and wellbeing. I am currently conducting research for this charity to provide measurement and evaluation of these therapies and support offered to the children. We are in the process on carrying out an evaluative pilot study with the aim to conduct our main study in September. Due to significant local authority funding cuts for this type of service has been reduced in schools. This research aims to demonstrate the need for such support and the importance of promoting wellbeing in children to improve academic success. Show less
