I was accepted and given the opportunity to take the year off and study full-time, whilst in London. As part of this intensive course, I researched the potential for a pro-poor manufacturing industry in regional Uganda.• Our team of 7 conducted interviews with local stakeholders from central and local government, to large and small manufacturing firms, and industry unions.• The total project period spanned over 3 months, with 3 weeks in country.• We looked closely at the whole value-chain of local businesses and how to improve their market access, i.e. diversification of products, access to finance/insurance, access to reliable power, etc.• Our report received high acclaim from both UCL and the Reserve Bank of Uganda, and is now being used as an example of what is expected by future students.
