Aug 2013 - May 2014Policy research internWorking in the Florida Senate Majority Office as a policy research intern allowed me to use my prior knowledge in politics and U.S. government. I researched and compiled data on various public policies and presented findings to the five policy analysts. I took notes at Florida Senate and House committee meetings and presented information as briefs to analysts, senior staff members, and senators. I prepared and distributed daily briefs comprised of bill updates, relevant news, schedules, and other information to all caucus members. I assisted the Press Secretary by drafting press releases, speeches, policy briefs, and media statements. I also processed press and other media-related inquiries. I added content to the office internal SharePoint site and updated several Twitter and Facebook accounts. Lastly, I served as the backup to the office secretary and fulfilled all administrative and clerical duties during any absences. I researched and presented daily press briefings and updates to the Ambassador, Deputy Chief of Mission, and other senior Embassy staff members. I assisted the Public Affairs Chief in developing and planning events to meet Mission and State Department goals. I was especially active in the preparation and organization of the Young Leaders for Tomorrow’s Europe Conference in Bratislava. I coordinated with the organizers, helped form their grant application, ensured all requirements were being met, and facilitated communication with other embassies to ensure all participants were able to attend event. I worked closely with the Press Attaché to gather and compile media commentary to report to Washington on a daily basis after the downing of flight MH17. Throughout the entire internship, I updated all Embassy social media platforms and created an Embassy social media strategy. During the internship, I worked closely with the Ambassador and DCM. I attended several official events and meetings to take notes and photograph proceedings. I drafted remarks for several events and meetings for the Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission. I worked closely with the political and economic section to compose issue briefs and cables on topics such as LGBTI rights, human rights, and youth engagement. I also worked with the section to collaborate on remarks and social media posts.Lastly, I established a strong connection between the Front Office and the Public Affairs Section in the absence of a PAO and Deputy PAO, by consulting with the PAS staff on the particulars of their portfolios and outstanding issues.
