    • Las lomas high school

      2000 - 2004
      High school degree biology, general

For my senior project I chose to research the Human Genome Project and for my project I visited the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA. During my visits to the JGI, I was mentored by a senior research associate who taught me firsthand how genomes got sequenced and assembled.

    • Uc davis

      Mar 2006 - Aug 2009
      Undergraduate researcher

As an undergraduate in Professor Artyom Kopp's lab I studied variation in germline stem cell (GSC) maintenance between two separate groups of flies selected for increased reproduction early and late in life. I found that there appears to be a correlation between GSC maintenance and rate of reproduction in aging adult flies. My research in the lab resulted in a first author review paper.

      ● Screened the lab's transgenic crustacean lines and reselected for improved expression of transgenes.● Trained an undergraduate in molecular cloning, and other essential molecular biology techniques necessary to investigate germline regeneration in a crustacean. ● Ran pilot experiments on a heat-inducible transgenic line that I generated during my Ph.D. Provided evidence in transgenic crustacean embryos that misimpression of a BMP homolog, dpp, is misepxressed upon heat-shock treatment. Show less Dissertation: Germline maintenance and regeneration in an amphipod crustacean.● Cloned, generated, and purified fusion proteins for the production of a polyclonal antibody made to a germline-specific protein which was used in immunofluorescence experiments to clearly identify germline cells.● Generated transgenic crustaceans for investigating the role of BMP signaling in germline maintenance and regeneration.● Designed a new protocol for culturing dissected ovaries.● Screened crustacean transcriptome to find additional germline gene candidates, which were verified via whole mount in situ hybridization.● Successfully generated illumina RNA-seq libraries from small tissue samples for transcriptomics analysis in stickleback fish and analyzed raw reads by writing scripts in perl.● Mentored three undergraduates in essential molecular biology techniques, microscopy, scientific writing, and presentation skills. Teaching assistant

I was a Teaching Assistant for the arthropod module of the summer embryology course. I helped flip flies and prepare reagents and animals for the course. I also taught students general animal husbandry for amphipod crustaceans, microinjections, and I led dissection demonstrations on fly and crustacean ovaries.

      Cirm predoctoral scholar

      ● Awarded the CIRM predoctoral fellowship for 2013 and had it renewed for an additional year in 2014.● Funded stipend for two years and research funds to investigate germline regeneration in a crustacean.● Attended monthly meeting discussions on various stem cell research occurring on campus.● Presented at the annual stem cell retreat in Asilomar, California (2014).

    • Berkeley science review

      Oct 2014 - May 2015
      Contributing writer

I wrote articles for the Berkeley Science Review, a graduate student-led online and printed magazine featuring the latest research and science-related news at UC Berkeley.

    • Harvard university

      Aug 2015 - Dec 2015
      Teaching fellow

I taught three sections of a molecular and cell biology lab course (MCB60) at Harvard. The lab focused on investigating the DNA damage/repair pathway in yeast, teaching students to perform PCR, yeast transformation, Co-Immunoprecipitation, SDS-PAGE, Western, Canavanine assay, microscopy, how to design experiments, and how to give an effective presentation.

    • Broad institute of mit and harvard

      May 2016 - Aug 2017

I worked in Dr. Deb Hung's lab in the Infectious Disease and Microbiome group, where I optimized and performed quality control on next-generation library construction, bacterial RNA enrichment, and lysis methods for single-cell RNA-sequencing. I also developed shell and python scripts for troubleshooting library construction methods. I also conducted weekly meetings with a team of lab members to strategically decide on future experiments to reach project goals. As the scientific communications instructor for the 2016 Summer Research Program in Genomics (SRPG) cohort, I co-taught a weekly course which prepared the undergraduate students for an oral and poster presentation at the end of their research program.
