Institut des langues et cultures (ilc) assistant

I chose to do a work placement for the year abroad element of my degree in order to gain experience within a large French corporation.I was a French speaker on the welcome desk of the language centre: answering the phone, inputting statistics and welcoming clients. This required good communication skills. I assisted as a native speaker in language courses, which required confidence and clarity. I evaluated English levels, created individual learning plans and gave conversation classes. Time management was essential with the commute and I also worked as part of a team. Show less

    • Mallory international limited

      Sept 2008 - Sept 2013
Manager - academic and business customers

Mallory International Ltd an export bookseller, which sells books and educational materials to schools, institutions and aid-funded projects predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa. My role involved strong research and IT skills for quoting to customers and knowledge of export and tendering procedures and letters of credit. I dealt with customers in several countries and I managed the majority of projects in Rwanda. Time management was important as we often manage several projects simultaneously; as was having an eye for detail when checking documents and submitting quotes.Communication and language skills were essential. I was partly responsible for expanding business in francophone Africa. I attended the Paris Book Fair annually to meet with publishers.I also travelled to the countries where we work in order to meet with our customers and to introduce the company to new clients, who range from schools, colleges and bookshops, to universities and government ministries. I have been to Rwanda, Tanzania, Madagascar and Cameroon and travelled independently on several occasions. I am confident with international travel and conducting business meetings in both English and French. I managed a team; responsible for overseeing and allocating workload and ensuring deadlines are met. I have been involved in interviewing, giving training and conducting appraisals. I also met regularly with the Executive Group to review organisational effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements. Show less

    • Quarriers

      Dec 2013 - Sept 2015
      Corporate relations manager

Spanning support for adult disabilities, children & families, young adults and epilepsy, Quarriers is Scotland’s most diverse social care services provider.Quarriers was an Official Charity of The 2014 Ryder Cup raising funds for Coaching for Life which offers support and guidance for young people who are facing disadvantages like homelessness, leaving care, emotional trauma and a neglected education. My role was to engage with companies to help promote and fundraise for Coaching for Life, whilst also supporting the wider fundraising team with their activities and events in relation to the Ryder Cup charitable status. I also worked directly to develop a strategy and materials to use when engaging with companies and supporting their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) goals. I managed logging of funds and distribution of tickets to stakeholders - combined with the other Official Charities we raised nearly 1 million euros for our respective projects. Show less
