The Institute purchased several adjacent properties to develop a 100,000 square foot expansion for the campus. The goal was to build on the site’s existing character and seamlessly integrate the new structure within the forested site. The new property also includes a historic residence and boxwood garden which will be restored to their original intent. The project has received LEED Gold Certification. Show less

Quarry Lake at Greenspring 2012 MDASLA Merit Award A trip to Quarry Lake reveals a dramatic transformation from a long-standing, nuisance quarry site to a valued resource for the local community through its visitation and vibrancy. The 271 acre site has been reclaimed and redeveloped as a high-quality, mixed-use community hosting a variety of corporate and medical offices, retail shops and services, restaurants and a mix of single-family and condominium home offerings. The community focal point is a linear park-promenade following the quarry rim of a dramatic 40 acre, limestone rock edged lake that will fill to become one of the deepest lakes in Maryland. EDSA and Daft McCune Walker collaborated to blend the residential and commercial visions of Beazer Homes Maryland & Obrecht Properties LLC throughout the planning/design process. This team continuity proved to be key to maintaining a unified design vision from planning through implementation. Significant contributions included revising the original PUD to create more meaningful public park spaces, sculpting landforms to balance remediated grades, storyboarding a “Quarry Village” theme through the various neighborhoods, and building a unique pool amenity package for residents. Sustainable stewardship techniques played a key role in transforming this barren property, to a now lush, active, pedestrian focused and healthy environment for all to enjoy. Quarry Lake is a showcase example of how true collaboration between owners, the community and design professionals, as creative problem solvers, can raise the standard for community design in the region and a project’s overall success. The Rowan Boulevard Redevelopment Plan has embraced that missing link in creating a public-private partnership that is sometimes necessary to complete large endeavors of this scale. The client, Glassboro Town Officials, and representatives from Rowan University have shown a passion to make Rowan Boulevard a success for the town, its students, and its citizens. The 26-acre development is to include a hotel, office and residences located above a variety of shops and restaurants, affordable townhome residential, a potential grocer anchor, a 1.5-acre park, and student housing to be completed as a Public-Private Partnership between the client, Glassboro Town officials and representatives from Rowan University. Parking is situated to the rear of the main retail boulevard with the option of developing surface parking or deck parking in order to meet shared parking needs of the development. The Rowan Boulevard corridor strives to create a sense of place and activity within the larger community of Glassboro. Rowan Boulevard is one of seven exemplary projects to be honored in 2009 for setting New Jersey on a course toward smart growth — growth that spurs the economy, improves communities and protects the environment, according to New Jersey Future, the nonprofit smart-growth research and advocacy group.
